windows onto the past

This was taken at the Steele Farm in Boxborough, which the town now owns. People use the land for walking, sledding, and just generally hanging out. I'm glad the town decided to buy and preserve this piece of local history.

I'm not sure why I am so taken by this coat hanging on a a chair. I think the way it fits the chair makes it look a bit human, or as if a ghost were inside. I also like the quality of the light as it shines through. The light casts soft shadows on the material and the chair seat.

This is one of my favorite flower photos. I think that's because it reminds me of a painting.

three daffodils

My neighbor Jackie sells daffodils each year to benefit the American Cancer Society. I always buy some; it's not often I can do good at the same time that I treat myself to something that gives me so much pleasure.

I have many many cat photos on flickr, because there's a group called "Furry Friday" that I joined, so I usually take some pictures for that each week. Both of my cats are pretty photogenic, and both are pretty relaxed about having cameras shoved in their faces while they go about their routines. This image of Lucky is one of my favorites, both for the pose and the little spot of pink tongue that's visible.

'Tis the season for daffodils. These were taken next to a window. In order to get the flowers exposed correctly, the background was over exposed. I liked that look and have used it several times since.

Kate gave me the recipe for this, explaining that it was quick and easy and pretty. She was right.

At one of the sites where I post pictures, someone asked what my favorite subjects were. Flowers, probably, are first, but also food, cats, and nature. I'm going to start putting some of my favorite images from flickr here, because I have thousands of images on flickr and it's often hard for a new visitor to figure out how to find my favorites there.

It's fun to play with various exposures and take pictures in different kinds of light. Here light from the window was just hitting the flowers and not the background.

I moved these flowers to the window to try to get some light on them, but it was so dark outside that it didn't help much. I tried a few variations and liked the soft dreamy quality that this overexposure had.

This image has always been a favorite of mine, and this week it was chosen to be the new icon for the flower group on flickr. For three months, every person who posts any picture to this group will see this image...sort of mind-boggling, since this is a BIG group with more than 12,000 members.

A gal who works in my office building gave me a birthday bear, whom I named Roufous, for obvious reasons. Roufous has lots of personality. I still have the last birthday bear I received. It's made of real mohair and is stuffed with wooden excelsior, among other things. I was probably around 8 years old at the time and never that interested in baby dolls, but I sure loved stuffed animals. I guess I still do, since this little guy makes me smile. I think it's the slightly bald spot on his nose that gets me.

hello world!

This is a new blog for photos, easier than doing all the html coding for a website of the same name. It is a birthday gift from Jess and Greg—Ta-DAH!
